Vampire Power: The Spooky Monster Lurking in your Home!

How to Avoid Vampire Power with Power Compare
Tuesday, October 29, 2024

Watch out! Beware! The monster lurks in your home. It is silent. Invisible. And harmful to your power bill. It is the notorious vampire power.

Vampire power is a little known phenomenon that can consume small, yet significant amounts of power, thus, increasing your electricity bill.

What is Vampire Power?

Vampire power, or standby power, is the mode in which your devices and appliances fall into when you are not using them, but leave them on at their power source. For example, when you turn off the TV with the remote control, it sits in standby mode – the small amount of power needed to have the remote control sensor working, and the little red LED light. This means that the appliance is ready to go whenever you are. It also happens when you leave your phone charger plugged into the wall, with the switch on. Don’t forget to turn the power off in the morning when you take your phone off charge!

The devices and appliances tend to fall victim to vampire power the most:

How Can I Avoid Vampire Power?

While it is silent and invisible, it isn’t invincible! Here are a few ways you can avoid the increase bill that comes with vampire power.

Turn Appliances Off When Not Using Them

It is simple, really. Simply turn the device or appliance off at the wall when you are not using it, so it doesn’t fall into vampire power mode.

Energy Efficient Appliances

Invest in appliances that consume less energy to do their jobs. This means that when they do fall into standby mode, they will only use a very tiny amount of energy, thus, helping to minimise the impact of vampire power and save your hard-earned money.

Turn Appliances Off When you Go On Holiday

Before you dash out the door to catch your flight or start your road trip, be sure to go around the house and turn off appliances and devices at the wall. Turn off your lamps, lights, washing machine, TV, computer, dryer, espresso machine, microwave and towel rail. There’s no point in running these appliances while you are away and they will only chew through your power bill. But do leave your fridge and chest freezer on. You don’t want to come home to spoiled food!
